The Iowa Nitrogen Initiative (INI) is a public-private partnership that works with directly with Iowa farmers to conduct nitrogen rate research on their farm fields. In 2023, 270 trials were conducted. INI researchers will give an overview of the project and present yield response data from the 2023 trials. Using data from these trials to inform the Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator (APSIM), a cropping systems modeling platform, they will provide insight into crop N requirements and optimum N fertilizer rate under a range of management and weather conditions. This presentation will provide a demonstration of the APSIM and explain how INI data and APSIM will work together to inform a decision support tool that will change the way we think about nitrogen recommendations
